The Montreal Print Collectors’ Society (MPCS) is Canada’s oldest and most active group dedicated to encouraging the appreciation and study of original prints among art lovers. The Society grew out of a chance meeting between Joe King and A. McKenzie Brockman over
a Frank Milton Armington print, an event that coincided with a
lecture series by print expert/dealer Jan Johnson. In October of 1984, Joe King, our President Emeritus, gathered a group of like-minded people in his living room to further our print education. Currently,
we hold our lecture-meetings either at the Unitarian Church of Montreal or at galleries, museums or artists' studios.
In our egalitarian society, members range from major collectors
who have donated prints to museums, to people from all walks of
life. A number of our members are artists themselves and it is their work that we celebrate, in the welcome page of our website.
Viewing the variety and beauty of their contributions is intended to encourage the public to recognize the special and accessible place that original prints hold in the art world.
Our Montreal Print Collectors’ Society members learn about prints through our monthly talks from October through May either in English or French, covering topics from the Canadian, American and International scenes, and presented by printmakers, curators, critics, scholars, gallery owners and other experts.
Field trips have taken us to museums in Quebec and Ontario and for demonstrations at print ateliers. We have also enjoyed sessions on print preservation and papers. Fellow collectors select favourites from their private print cabinets to share at our annual Holiday Party "Show and Tell".
The Montreal Print Collectors’ Society organized and ran five editions of the Montreal Print Fair, the last one in 1996. Over the past 28 years, we have organized public exhibitions of prints both from members’ collections and by member artists at Galerie Daniel, the Dominion Gallery, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (1995), in New York City at Krasdale Foods, Inc. (1998), at the Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (2002) and at the Galerie du Complexe du Canal Lachine (2006). Thus far, the MPCS has issued four limited edition prints by member artists and published two monographs, respectively covering the prints of Caroline and Frank Armington, and Ernst Neumann. In 2011 we proudly published a calendar of prints by our artist members.
Our Montreal Print Collectors’ Society Newsletter is issued seven times a year from October to May. It keeps the membership informed about print exhibitions and events within reach, as well as our own activities.
We look forward to a future of continued success in promoting our passion for prints. Join us!
